Hugh was recorded along with his family by the 1861 census for Kilmaurs, Ayrshire. He was aged 4 years and a scholar. He had been born in Kilmarnock parish.

Hugh was employed as a pit engine keeper in 1891, according to the census of that year. He lived with his widowed mother at 27 Fore Street Kilmarnock. He was unmarried. ^{1 2}
