  Research Notes:

SURNAME

Jean or Jane "Bettie" rather than Bellie. The modern Scottish eqivalent is "Beattie". "Bellie" is the spelling indexed by Ancestry, owing to a mistaken reading of the original parish register where a double "tt" - uncrossed - was read as "ll". Other names and words in the document show clearly that this is the case. Scotland's People, that is GRO Scotland online, has it indexed correctly as Bettie. 1 3

Jean married James SCLANDERS on 24 Mar 1748 in Dunbar parish, East Lothian, Scotland.1 (James SCLANDERS was born about 1720.)

  Marriage Notes:

Old Parish Registers
Dunbar Parish East Lothian
Marriages

"1748 Marriages
March 24. James Slanders in par: of Bothkinner and Jean Bettie in ys - 18 - "

Note: The bride's name has been transcribed as Bellie, but it is clear from the original document's handwriting that the letter 't' is made consistently without the crossbar, as in this name, whereas the letter 'l' is consistently looped, which it is not in the surname above. 1

Jean next married Charles STEWART on 7 Nov 1775 in Rayne Parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.2 (Charles STEWART was born about 1745.)
