James was a journeyman shoemaker according to the marriage certificate of his daughter Mary Anne in 1871.

The 1881 census for 43 Dale Street Govan recorded James Niven, widower, as head of the household living there. With him lived his son Joseph, his married daughter Mary Ann McGonnogle and Mary's four children aged 15 months to 9 years. James was a shoemaker by occupation and aged 71 years. He had been born in County Derry, Ireland. 3 5


James married Catherine OWENS. (Catherine OWENS was born about 1815 and died between 1877 and 1881 3 6.)


James next married Mary Anne NIVEN, daughter of James NEVIN and Catherine OWENS, on 8 Nov 1859 in Borthwick Manse, Borthwick, Midlothian, Scotland.1 (Mary Anne NIVEN was born about 1851 at sea, near Mull of Kintyre, between Scotland and Ireland 5 7 and died after 2 Aug 1887 7.)

The marriage was solemnised after banns at Borthwick Manse according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. The Minister at Borthwick, James Reid, conducted the ceremony. The witnesses were Jane Reid and John McClure.

Joseph Adams, the bridegroom, made his X mark. He was aged 28 years and resident at Tynehead. He was a single man and worked as a labourer. He was 'Cousin German' to the bride. Both of his parents were living.

Mary Adams was recorded as 30 years of age and was also unmarried. She too was resident at Tynehead. No occupation was noted for her.

The marriage was registered on 22 November 1859 at Borthwick, Alexander MacDougall being the registrar. 1
