McGOVERN, Hugh 1

  • Born: 21 April 1869, Motherwell Poorhouse, Lanarkshire, Scotland 1

  General Notes:

Hugh was born in Motherwell Poorhouse, an illegitimate son of Catherine McGovern, who started a paternity suit against Hugh Quigley, a miner from Overton near Wishaw.

On the 1891 and 1901 census the young Hugh was listed as being born in Motherwell. In his marriage and death certificate, however, his mother was listed as Catherine Tweedle and his father as Hugh McGovern. No such Catherine Tweedle and Hugh McGovern have as yet been found. The names may have been switched to cover the stigma of illegitimacy young Hugh might otherwise have experienced.

The 1891 census listed Hugh McGovern as being born in Motherwell in 1869. He was living in Nelson Street, Tradeston in Glasgow as a boarder. He worked as a salesman publican. 1 2
