James married Ann STEWART, daughter of Edward STEWART and Margaret EWAN, on 4 March 1778 in Bothkennar, Stirlingshire, Scotland.¹ (Ann STEWART was baptised on 5 November 1758 in Bothkennar, Stirlingshire, Scotland and died after 27 April 1810.)

"The session being met and constitute, Sed^t. Min^r & Elders, compeared Ja^s. Sclanders and Ann Stewart, sua sponte, and acknowledged they had been irregularly married, produced lines dated Edin^r. 4^th. March 1778 acknowledged other as Husband and Wife, were desired to join hands, and so were declared married persons, were rebuked, exhorted, and so dismissed." ⁴
