General Notes:
"APPLICATION FOR PARISH RELIEF Margaret applied at 10.40 am on 11 December 1871 for parish relief. Her residence was 10 Coulters Lane Back Row Left. An inspector visited her at 2 pm on December 12 1871.
She was born in Belfast, Ireland. She was a widow, aged 39 years, and a Roman Catholic. She was or had been a millworker. Her 'problem' causing the application was the care of her children.
The notes for the application suggest that Bathgate had first been approached for relief and had awarded 2/- per week, but that Glasgow had the responsibility according to the rules of the poor law. References were given followed by this statement:
'The above named an admitted pauper of the parish of Bathgate has removed to the above address in the City parish and is herewith referred to you for future dealing as the parish of Residence, her aliment 2/- per week is paid up till this date..'
A list then follows of four lots of 10/- paid about six-monthly, the dates are unclear, but they may be connected with another application made much later, although the dating is unclear. The list seems to say 6 April 99 10/- 6 months 28 Sept 99 10/- 6 months 8 Mar 00 10/- 6 months 16 Aug 00 10/- 6 months
In the next section of this application, whose date is unclear but looks like 23/1/99, Margaret Crombie was again designated widow of Richard Lynas. She had been a widow for (?) years (it may be since '66) She was applying for Outdoor Relief. Her address was 63 East John Street 2 up. She was a housewife, and a Catholic. Then followed information about her children Mary, Ann Jane and Richard. After the children's information, were listed some more dates 26/1/01 enrolled at 10/- per month 12/10/?? died today and buried by friends 14/2/01 10/- 6 months 29/10/02 dead" 4
Margaret married Richard LYNESS, son of William LYNAS and Margaret NEASON, in December 1854 in Barony, Glasgow, Scotland.1 2 (Richard LYNESS was born about 1830 in Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland and died in 1867 in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland 3 5.)
