  General Notes:

James was a witness at the marriage of Bridget Vallely and George O'Brien by Father Michael Condon in St Mary's RC Chapel, Hamilton on 14 February 1851. The other witness was Margaret Mullany. James was probably a cousin.

We know there was a James Vallely in New Monkland parish because the St Margaret's 1851 entry for the wedding of Bridget Vallely confirms this. In the 1851 census for New Monkland parish taken on 30/31 March 1851 only one person's name comes close to that name : James Valaly. James Valaly was resident as a visitor at Galloway's Land, Bank Street in the parish of New Monkland. His age was recorded as 35 years and his place of birth as Ireland. He was a coal miner by occupation. This entry provides the continuity of information that links the James Vallely who was a witness at Bridget's wedding to the one who married Susan Stars.

The 1861 census for New Monkland recorded James Vallay (sic but indexed in GRO as Nallay-correction has been sent)) with his wife and two daughters living at 26 Aitchison Street Airdrie. A Irish born widow called Catherine Books, aged 65 years and a stocking weaver, lived there too. No relationship description to the rest of the family was entered. James was recorded as 47 years of age, born in Ireland, and was a coal miner.

James was a coal miner, married to Susan Stars, when he died at the end of 1867, aged 42 years. The age is mismatched with that given at the time of marriage in 1856 where James was said to be 40 years of age. He was most likely 52 years old at the time of his death in 1867. 3 6 7 8 9

  Research Notes:

MORE ABOUT 1851 CENSUS ENTRY ON JAMES VALALY

James was living in the household of John (30) and Jean (25) McCabe with their two very small children (3 & 1) and another male visitor Thomas Doyle (19). All three men were coal workers and all the adults were born in Ireland.

Jean or Jane McCabe was Jane Short before marriage and very likely related to the Peter Short who was a witness at the marriage of James to Susan Stars in 1856. For dates etc see entry for John McCabe outwith the OUR FAMILY section of Patrick's People.

  Medical Notes:

Robert Anderson MD certified the cause of death.

Susan Vallely, the widow, informed the registrar at Airdrie, William Whyte, of her husband's death on 2 January 1868, and made her X mark thereto.

James married Susan STARS, daughter of Robert STARS and Mary STARS MS UNKNOWN, on 18 January 1856 in St Margaret's RC Chapel, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 2 (Susan STARS was born about 1815 in Ireland 10 and died after 8 June 1870 4 11.)

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The priest who married the couple was Father F. McCullow CC and the witnesses were Peter Short and Isabella Delangy.

James Volloly, who made his X mark, was a collier, aged 40 years, of Airdrie.

Susan Stars was also 40 years old. She worked as a servant. She made her X mark too. Susan's mother's maiden surname was left blank.

The marriage was registered on 21 January 1856, William Landless, registrar. 1
