  General Notes:

In 1870 James Collins Furnacefiller was the informant of the birth of his son James at Dalmellington, Ayrshire, and in 1872 of his son Patrick's birth in the same parish, and made his X mark both times. He recorded the marriage of himself and his wife in both as 1866 Kilbirnie.

The 1871 census for Dalmellington in Ayrshire recorded James Collins, furnacefiller, aged 24 years, as head of a household at 50 Waterside. He had been born in Ireland. In the household with him were his wife Rosanna, also Irish born, aged 20 years, two small sons, owen and James, both born in Ayrshire, the first in Stevenston and the second in Dalmellington. There were also two Irish born lodgers: Daniel McKay, 41 years, furnacefiller, and John Hynes, 21, a labourer.

James Collins was the head of a household recorded by the 1881 census for Cambusnethan in Lanarkshire. The household resided at 32 Brown Street and consisted of James, his wife Rose, and their three sons and two daughters: Owen 13, James 11, Patrick 9, Rose Ann 3, Helen 1. James was a furnace man by occupation. He was 34 years old and had been born in Ireland.

James Collins was recorded as head of the household living at 6 Marshall Street Wishaw, according to the 1891 census for Cambusnethan. He was aged 44 years and worked as a furnaceman. He had been born in Ireland. Residing in the household were Rose, his wife, aged 43 years, born in Ireland, and their children:Owen, James, Patrick, Rose A., Ellen, Mary, Michael, Thomas and Maggie, ranging in age from 22 years to 2 years.

Danel Collins, the son of James Collins and his wife Rose Ann King, was born in Cross Row, Wishaw. James was the informant of the birth and made his X mark. His occupation was noted as "Black Furnace filler" and the date of his marriage as "December 1866" - a slight error.

The 1901 census for Old Monkland parish, Lanarkshire, recorded James Collins, aged 61 years and born in Ireland, residing as an inmate in the Poorhouse at Coathill, Coatbridge. he had formerly been an iron work labourer.

In her death certificate of 1920, Roseann Collins, nee King, was recorded as the "Widow of James Collins Blast Furnaceman". 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9


James married Rose KING, daughter of Patrick KING and Rose REILLY, on 27 November 1866 in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 (Rose KING was born in 1848 in Ireland 3, baptised on 3 December 1848 in Drumgooland Upper RC parish, County Down, Ireland 10 and died 10 January 1920 at 10.10 am in 3 Almondbank Terrace, Glasgow Road, Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland 5.). The cause of her death was cerebral haemorrhage over 6 months/recurrence of cerebral haemorrhage over 5 days.


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage took place, after banns, according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church.

Both James Collins and Rose King were single at the time of the marriage and both made their X mark. James was recorded as 22 years of age and Rose as 17 years old. Both were of Glengarnock, Ayrshire.
