APPLICATION FOR PARISH RELIEF
In 1857, at 1.40 pm on April 1st, an application for parish relief was made by ' Rose Kenan Quigly (index reads Kean). Given the pronunciation of names by Irish people, as heard by local Scots, the application may well have been made by this woman. Other circumstantial details support this.

Rose was a widow aged 58 and born in Ireland. Her address was 32 Stockwell Street far back low door right.

The inspector visited her on April 2 1857 at 1.00 pm. She was a washerwoman, and earned 2/- a week from lodgers. She was in ill health. She had no dependants. Details of her family were given as follows:
James aged 30 was in America.
Bridget aged 26 was also in America.
Eliza aged 25 was in Ireland.
Sarah aged 23 was in Ireland.
Peter aged 20 was a joiner in Paisley and married with 2 children.
Thomas aged 18 was a clothlapper. He lived with her and earned 10/- a week.

The settlement was Glasgow.
John Fraser, the assistant inspector, made the following remarks, rendered exactly, and signed below them:

"This woman applied very frequently before both for herself and children before she had acquired any settlement in Scotland, and I find by former reports that her son Thomas should now be aged 20 though she says 18 and herself 58 though she now calls herself 63 which her fase belies. I have always found her very unwilling to discribe her family and circumstances and at present she says she does not know where nor with whom Thomas works."

The particulars of settlement continued:
see Book 6 for Sept 1855 page 8
and 6 for Dec '54 page 14
also Book 3 for Sept 1849 page 10 and 3 for Decr 1849 page 4.
"In the two last reports refered(sic) to her settlement is Ireland but in the other 2 it is Glasgow, as her name does not appear in the books so far as I can find from 13 Dec 1849 (when she was ordered into the house with 3 of her children) till 10 Dec 1850. She seems this(sic) to have required a residence clear of 5 years except 3 days. She did not go into the house in Dec 1849.

I gave a line to the house on 2nd Apr 1857." 6 7

Rose married John QUIGLEY. (John QUIGLEY was born about 1795 and died before 15 July 1875.)
