Thomas was recorded as a toddler of 1 year when recorded by the 1841 census for Haddington. He had been born in East Lothian.

The 1851 census recorded Thomas the elder and aged 16 years, and Alexander as aged 11 years. Thomas was a carpenter's apprentice and had been born in Haddington. He was unmarried.

The 1861 census for St Cuthbert's Parish, Edinburgh, recorded Thomas Nisbet as head of the household consisting of himself, his wife, and their two sons, living at Dean Haugh. Thomas was a millwright, born in Haddington, and was 25 years of age.


Thomas married Catherine PATON, daughter of John PATON and Catherine FINDLAY, on 11 March 1859 in Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Scotland. (Catherine PATON was born on 14 February 1839 and was baptised on 3 March 1839 in Craig By Montrose, Forfarshire, Scotland.)
