  General Notes:

The 1855 birth certificate of his daughter Mary recorded Charles Macafferty as an agricultural labourer, aged 29 years. His birthplace was County Donegal, Ireland. The certificate also recorded the couple's marriage in Campsie in 1855, and that they had one daughter living.

In his wife's death certificate of 1922 Charles McAfferty was recorded as having been a mason by occupation. He was deceased by then. 2 3

  Research Notes:

A marriage between a Charles McCafferty and a Margaret McLean took place in Barony parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland on 17 May 1846. This is a possible for the first marriage of Charles, at least until further information is available.


Charles married Sarah QUIGLEY, daughter of Michael QUIGLEY and Mary McCALLION, on 25 April 1855 in Lennoxtown Campsie, Stirlingshire, Scotland.1 (Sarah QUIGLEY was born about 1835 in County Derry, Ireland 2 and died 18 March 1922 at 1.30 pm in 11 Dungoyne Gardens, Glasgow, Scotland 3.). The cause of her death was senile decay.


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage after banns was celebrated according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The celebrant was John Gillon, Catholic clergyman at Lennoxtown. The witnesses were John Quigley and Condy Gallagher.

Charles McAfferty (sic), of Printer's Row, Balfron, was aged 28 years. This was his second marriage and he had one child. He had been born in Ireland.

Sarah Quigley was aged 20 years. No birth place and no 'present' or 'usual' address was recorded on the certificate. Nor was her birthplace recorded. No maiden surname was noted for her mother, only 'Mary Quiggley'.

The marriage was registered at Campsie on 27 April 1855, William Gilchrist being the signing registrar. 5
