The 1841 census for Drumnagarrow in Glenbucket parish, Aberdeen, recorded James Brodie, a farmer, aged in the 45 to 49 years range, living with his wife, Barbara, aged in the 30-34 year range, and their children, William, 10 years, Mary, 8 years, James, 6 years, John, 4 years, and Alexander, aged 2 years. All had been born in Aberdeenshire.

"In Memory of Mary Margaret, daughter of James Brodie, farmer in Drumnagarrie, who died on the 7th March, 1853, aged 18 years. The
above said James Brodie died 1st April 1885 aged 89 years and his wife Barbara Murdoch died 4th June 1888 aged 81 years. Also their
oldest son William who died 6th April, 1896, aged 65 years. Also their daughter Jane who died at Huntly 24th March 1905, aged 60 years."
