In the 1841 census for Dunkeld parish in Perthshire Jane Hardie was living in the High Street with her family, the youngest of four children aged 6 years down to 5 months. Her age was noted as 5 months and her birthplace was Perthshire.

In 1851 Peter and Margaret Hardie were recorded living at Baledmund Cottage in Dowally Parish, Perthshire with their granddaughter, Jane Hardie. Jane Hardie was recorded as 9 years of age and had been born in Dunkeld, Perthshire. She was a scholar at home.

The 1861 census for the civil parish of Dowally in Perthshire recorded Jane Hardie living at Balledmund with her grandparents Hardie. Jane was recorded as born in Dunkeld, Perthshire, and aged 18 years. Jane was an agricultural labourer.
