The 1891 census recorded Joseph living with his wife and family at Hamilton, Lanarkshire. He was aged 37 years.

In 1894 Joseph's wife, Margaret, died. Joseph was recorded in her death certificate as a pawnbroker.

By 1901, Joseph was a widower. He and his family lived at Viewfield Cottages, Burnbank Road, Hamilton. ^{2 3 4}

Joseph married Margaret SMALL, daughter of Joseph SMALL and Margaret MULLEN, on 27 November 1872 in Roman Catholic Chapel, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.¹ (Margaret SMALL was born about 1851 and died 26 June 1894 Jun at 4.50 pm in Viewfield Cottage, Burnbank Road, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland ^{5 6}.). The cause of her death was 'morbus cordis' of 10 years' duration.

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The priest was James Danaher, RCC at Hamilton. The witnesses were Francis Lynas and Helen Small, probably relatives of the couple being married.

Joseph Lynas, the groom, was an unmarried man of 20 years of age, who worked as a bookkeeper. His usual residence was noted as 30 Senex? Street, Liverpool, England.

The bride, Margaret Small, was also unmarried and aged 21 years. She lived at 19 Castle Street, Hamilton.
