The 1841 census for Garshore or Gartshore, Kirkintilloch Dunbartonshire recorded a John Vallely in the age range 45-49 years living with a Margaret Vallely aged 27 years, born outside of Dunbartonshire, and a baby Laurence Vallely aged 4 months, born in Dunbartonshire. A young woman called Sally Valleyley aged 12 years and born outside of Dunbartonshire, also lived in the household. John worked as a labourer and had been born in Ireland.

Laurence was not listed in the family entry for 1851, but Lawrence Valliley was recorded as 20 years of age in the family entry of the 1861 census for Kilmarnock. He worked as a mason's labourer. He had been born in Kirkintilloch Dunbartonshire. ^{1 2}
