  General Notes:

In the Moray Local Heritage website, Dr Duncan Carmichael is referred to as living in Buckie, and "nephew of Duncan Carmichael saddler in Dunkeld". The sources noted are local newspaper references. The headstone reference for him is the same as that of his uncle: Ch176.

The 1851 census for Buckie in Banffshire recorded Duncan Carmichael as head of a household in the High Street, in which lived with him his aunt, Christian Carmichael a "Sadler's Widow" aged 87 years, Helen Coupland a house servant and Margaret Coupland a scholar. Duncan was recorded as being born in Pitlochry Perthshire and was a widower aged 43 years. The entry also recorded Duncan as an M.D. St Andrew's, and (what looks like in a distortedly written entryline) MRCS Edinburgh, in medical practice.

In his death certificate of 1877 Duncan Carmichael was recorded as a "Medical Practitioner Married to Elizabeth Simpson (Illegitimate)". His age at death was noted as 69 years. Neither of his parents were recorded as dead.

The death recorded of Duncan Carmichael, aged 83 years, in 1846 in Buckie, Banffshire recorded him as "uncle to Dr C. --" 1 4 6 7

  Research Notes:

CHAPELFORD CEMETERY

St Ninian's Cemetery, Chapelford is situated near to Braes of Enzie, Moray in north east Scotland. It is a Roman Catholic cemetery with a very small chapel in the grounds. A church located in St Ninian's burial ground, Chapelford, was destroyed by soldiers in 1728, and was replaced by the long barn or cottage-shaped RC Church at Tynet dating from 1755, about four miles west of Buckie. This latter church, as well as the cemetery, forms part of the significant clandestine history of the Roman Catholic church in 18th century Scotland, important still from then until the present day for its role in keeping the Catholic faith alive during times of proscription. In 1788 St Gregory's Preshome took over from the Tynet church as the main RC church in the area; it was the first church building to be openly built by Catholics in Scotland since the Reformation of 1560 and indeed, compared with the little church at Tynet looks much more like a "church" in the usual sense, than its smaller predecessor. 8 9 10 11

  Medical Notes:

W. Simpson MB certified the causes of death.

William Clapperton, the "Attending Clergyman" whose address was the Chapel house Nether Buckie, gave notice of Duncan's death before the registrar at Buckie on 23 February 1877. 4

Duncan married Elizabeth SIMPSON, daughter of John SIMPSON and Margaret WILSON, on 27 May 1852 in Mills of Rathven, Rathven Parish, Banffshire, Scotland.1 2 3 (Elizabeth SIMPSON was born about 1811 in Rathven parish, Banffshire, Scotland 12 and died 4 December 1888 at 6.40 am in High Street, Buckie, Banffshire, Scotland 5.). The cause of her death was general paralysis over 12 days.4
