1851 Census:
At this time Richard Hannigan and his wife Eliza were living in Paisley Road in Cross Arthurlie in Neilston parish, Renfrewshire. Richard was 34 years old and worked as an agricultural labourer. He had been born in Ireland, as had his wife who was 33 years old. They had three children, Mary, Rosann, and Richard. Mary was 9 years old and worked as a tearer. Rosann was 3 years of age and Richard 2 months. All three were born in Neilston.

1861 Census:
Richard and Elizabeth Hannigan were living at Water Road,Neilston, with their four children: Mary aged 19 years, Rose Ann aged 13 years, Richard aged 8 years (sic), and Elizabeth aged 1 year. Richard and Elizabeth were recorded as 45 and 42 years respectively. In their household was a visitor: a woman named Sarah McIlroy aged 50 years. She was recorded as Richard's sister in law, and like him and his wife she had been born in Ireland. She was a dressmaker by occupation. Richard and Elizabeth were both listed as labourers. Their daughters Mary and Rose Ann worked in a printfield. Richard was a scholar.

Richard died in 1873. His death certificate recorded him as a labourer aged 45 years, married to Elizabeth Hogg. His parents were deceased. 4 5 7

  Research Notes:

TEARER

"Assisted a cloth printer by drawing a brush over the wooden sieve to lay on colour evenly ready for the next serving of the block. A monotonous job relieved by having to fetch colour from the colour shop."

Richard's brother, Patrick, gave notice of his death before the registrar at Barrhead on 3 January 1873. 5


Richard married Elisabeth HOGG on 25 November 1847 in Neilston parish, Renfrewshire, Glasgow.1 (Elisabeth HOGG was born about 1818 in Ireland 4 and died after 2 January 1873 5.)
