Archibald Carmichael, aged 84 years was recorded by the 1851 census for Perthshire, Scotland living with his daughter Clementina Carmichael at Gairdrum in the civil parish of St Martins. Clementina's place of birth was Kenmore, Perthshire. He was a labourer by occupation.

In his death certificate of 1861 Archibald Carmichael was recorded as a widower, though no wife's name was recorded, and aged 94 years. His parents were deceased.

In the death certificate of his son Duncan in 1884 and in that of his son Archibald in 1885, Archibald Carmichael elder was recorded as "Farmer (Deceased)".

In the death certificate of his daughter Clementina in 1892, Archibald Carmichael, then deceased, was recorded as a 'pendicler' by occupation, that is someone who rents a croft for a living. ^{2 4 6 7 8}
