QUIGLAY, James ²

   Cause of his death was typhoid fever of 11 days' duration.

   Other names for James were QUIGLEY, James ⁵ and QUIGLY, James.⁶

  General Notes:

In the 1841 census is an entry which may be this person. A James Quigley was recorded working as an agricultural labourer at Balgray in the Barony parish of Glasgow. He was aged in the 20-24 years age group and had been born in Ireland. Another Irish born man of a similar age group called Thomas Quigley was also working there as an agricultural labourer, possibly a brother or a cousin of James.

The 1851 census for Riccarton recorded James Quigley living as a lodger with William and Elesabeth Thomson at Old Hurlford. Another lodger, Robert Shields lived there too. James was unmarried, aged 27 years and worked as a labourer. He had been born in Monachan (sic) Ireland.

James along with his wife and four children was recorded by the 1861 census living at Fardihill (sic) Colliery in the parish of Kilmaurs, Ayrshire. He was a pithead man, aged 30 years, and had been born in Ireland.

His death certificate in 1867 says James was a labourer when employed. He was aged 42 years at the time of his death and was married to Agnes Dunnachie.

In 1869 when his daughter Catherine died, her death certificate did not record James as deceased, though the other biographical details appear to be in order and accurate. James was recorded as a labourer.

In the 1877 marriage certificate of his son James, James senior was recorded as 'pitheadman deceased'. This was also the designation recorded in the death certificate of the same son, James, in 1914. ^{3 7 8}

'Fardilill' Colliery was probably a colliery at or near Fardalehill in East Ayrshire, beside Busbiehead.

H. Donachie, the brother of the widow, informed the registrar Thomas Dickie at Kilmarnock on 12 February 1867.

2. sponsor at baptism, 29 January 1854, St Joseph's RC Chapel, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. ¹⁰ Mary, daughter of James Donochy and Mary Donochy, was born on 20 Dec 1853 and baptised by Fr John McLachlan. James Quigley and Cath. Donochy were her sponsors.

James married Agnes DONAGHAY on 12 December 1851 in St Joseph's RC Chapel, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.¹ (Agnes DONAGHAY was born about 1828 in County Derry, Ireland and died between 1891 and 1914.)

  Marriage Notes:

The couple married at St Joseph's RC Church, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire by Fr Thomas Wallace on 12 December 1851 and were inscribed in his records as James Quigly and Agnes Donley.

James was born in County Monaghan, Ireland and Agnes in County Derry. The witnesses were William McQuillan and Mary Donley. ¹
