The 1861 census for Monkton and Prestwick, Ayrshire, recorded William living with his parents and brother, David, in Sandgate Street. He was aged 10 years and was a scholar. He had been born in Prestwick. 3


William married Mary McMASTER, daughter of John McMASTER and Mary ALLAN, on 5 September 1873 in 13 Marnock Street, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 (Mary McMASTER was born in 1853.)


  Marriage Notes:

The couple were married within the community of the Church of Scotland by John Thomson, Minister of St Marnock's. The witnesses were John Manson and Annie Merchall.

William, of Langfaulds Street, was a bachelor of 22, who worked as a joiner. His father Thomas was dead, and his mother Elizabeth still living.

Mary was a domestic servant, an unmarried woman of 19. Both her parents were dead. The wedding took place at her place of residence, 13 Marnock Street.

The marriage was registered in Kilmarnock on September 8 1873, J. McKean being the registrar. 1
