Thomas and his family were recorded by the 1851 census living in Old Monkland parish, Lanarkshire. Thomas and his wife were 32 years old. John was 10 years old, Samuel was 8 years old, Margaret 6 years old, Sarah 4 years old, Thomas 2 years old, and Mary Jane 1 year old.
Mary Jane was not recorded in the family entry of the 1871 census. A later child of the family was named Mary too, and we can perhaps assume that Mary Jane died early in her life. 2
