Catherine was widowed in 1900.

The census of 1901 for Hamilton recorded Catherine McGonagle, aged 33 years, as head of the household, living with her five children, aged 10 years to 8 months, at 84 Eddlewood Rows. Four boarders also lived with them, two of whom were named McGonagle, Thomas aged 27 years, and Maggie McGonagle aged 23 years.

In the marriage certificate of her daughter, Margaret McGonagle, in 1919, her mother was recorded as 'Catherine McNicol previously McGonagle Maiden Surname Early'. ^{2 3 4}

Catherine married William McGONAGLE, son of James McGONIGAL and Mary LAFFERTY, in 1888 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.¹ (William McGONAGLE was born on 12 September 1862 in Tollcross, Old Monkland Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland ^{3 5} and died 20 June 1900 at 8.30 am in 84 Eddlewood Rows, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland ^{2 6}.). The cause of his death was acute pneumonia over 9 days.
