"Alexander Innes (at Birnie parish in 1589), brother of 1589 George Innes, MA.; min. of Essil in 1588; trans, and adm. in 1589; deprived in 1598. On 21st March 1598-9 William Hay, uncle of William H. of Mayne, and Agnes Leslie, widow of Alexander Douglas, Provost of Elgin (and mother of the min. of that parish, and afterwards Bishop of Moray) were slain, and Hay of Mayne was mutilated by a party of Inneses. The min. of Birnie was charged with 'being art and part in the crime'; and was on 21st Jan. 1606 outlawed. [Pitcairn's Crim. Trials, ii. ; G. R. Inhib., xxxii., 391.]"

Alexander Annand of Murrestoun for Thomas Grant in Letachie (Lettauch), 500 merks, not to reset or intercommune with Mr. Alexander Innes, sometime minister at Birneych (Birnie) and other Inneses, all put to the horn at the instance of William Hay of Mayne, James Douglas, provost of Elgin, and other Douglases for the shameful slaughter of Agnes Leslie, relict of Mr. Alexander Douglas, provost of Elgin, and of the late William Hay, father-brother (uncle) of the said William Hay of Mayne, and for mutilation of the said William Hay in his left hand."
