James Grant sold Carron in 1786 or 1787 to Robert Grant of Wester Elchies.

James married Elizabeth GRANT, daughter of Lieutenant Joseph GRANT and Unknown, 1771 (marriage settlement). (Elizabeth GRANT was born about 1745 ¹ and died in 1814 in Bath, Somerset, England ¹.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Captain James Grant of Carron, succeeded his father in Carron. He served a considerable time in the army as ensign and lieutenant. and was present at the battle of Fontenoy in 1745, when only eighteen years of age. He was baron of Mulderie in Moray in 1767, and in 1774 a commissioner of supply for Elgin and Forres. He inherited the estate of his uncle, Dr. Patrick Grant of Antigua, who died in 1770; but in 1783 his failure is referred to in the testament of Lewis Grant of Wester Elchies, to whom he was a debtor. He sold Carron in 1786 or 1787 to Robert Grant of Wester Elchies. James Grant married 'Mrs. Grant of Carron,' known as the authoress of 'Roy's Wife of Aldivalloch.' She survived him, and married, secondly, Dr. Murray, a physician in Bath. He died in the Abbey of Holyrood House on 14th March 1790, and at the giving up of his testament his estate was valued at £5, 4s. He had five sons."

"John Grant of Carron, had Carron, and so did his son's descendants in the male line till Captain Lewis Grant of Auchterblair, who married Elizabeth Grant, elder daughter of Colonel John Grant, sixth of Carron, purchased the estate of Carron from the heir male, Charles Grant of Ringorme, about the year 1750.

Captain Lewis's son. Captain James Grant of Carron, however, sold Carron about 17S6 or 1787 to Robert Grant of Wester Elchies. Captain James Grant's wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Lieutenant Joseph Grant, of the Auchterblair family, was 'Mrs Grant of Carron,' the authoress of ' Roy's Wife of Aldivalloch.' She survived her husband, who died in the Abbey of Holyrood House on 14th March, 1790, and married, secondly, Dr James Thomas Murray of Dungannon, a Physician in Bath"

"A gentleman by the name of Peter Grant from New Zealand sent me the following:
'The pedigree of the Grants of Carron as published in 'The History of Antigua' (author unknown to me) at pg 426. The tree is headed 'Pedigree of the Family of Grant of Carron, North Britain and of the Islands of Antigua and St Vincent in the West Indies' and a asterisked footnote says 'Most of this information supplied by the Rev. Wickham M. Birch, Vicar of Ashburton'.

1. Effingham Grant son of Captain James Grant of Carron and Wester Elchies b 1727; heir 1770 to his uncle Patrick Grant of Antigua; died 1790 in Holyrood, by Capt James' second wife Elizabeth Grant, marriage settlement dated 1771. She m 2ndly Dr James T Murray and lived and died at Bath (for her see Dict of Nat Biography vol xxii p 385).

Beside a son Effingham, their children noted are Rev Joseph Grant (d 17 Jun 1801 Edinburgh), Captain John Grant, Captain Peter Grant, Captain William Grant, Mary Ann How Grant and Louisa Grant.' (I believe Fraser in Chiefs of Grant only lists Effingham and Joseph).

James Grant of Carron died deeply in debt in 1790 and gave up his testament to his debtors. Effingham Grant also lived in Holyrood and gave his testament also when his father died; the trail that I have ends there."
