  General Notes:

On 25 February 1749 the law Lords refused a petition in the case of Stewart in Towiemore Against Anderson. Robert Stewart had contracted debts, and to assist him Alexander Anderson undertook, with others, the debts. Anderson contracted the debts in his own name. No writing intervened, and later Robert Stewart's son claimed ignorance of this situation. Robert Stewart died before the proof of these matters could have been sorted out, and the heir was not held to account for the debts incurred. (Decisions of the Court of Session) ⁴

Robert married Isobel LAW, daughter of Reverend Mr William LAW of Newton, Minister of Forres parish and Isobel LESLIE 'in Mortlach'.¹ (Isobel LAW was born about 1690.)

"Of the Laws of Newton, co. Banff, said in the Lyon Register to be of the same family as Archbishop Law, was William of Newton, who had issue, Thomas of Newton, d.s.p. ; Mr William of Newton, d.s.p. ; Margaret, married William (see Note) Anderson of Newton ; Jean, died unmarried ; Isobel, married Robert Stewart of Towiemore."
