"William Law of Newton, born about 1655, second son of Thomas L., min. of Elgin; educated at King's College, Aberdeen; M.A. (1671); became chaplain to Alexander, Earl of Moray; passed trials before the Presb. and was recommended for licence, 1st Aug. 1677;pres. by Lord Moray before 23rd June, and after secondary trials, was ord. by Bishop Falconar 16th Sept. 1680; deprived by the Privy Council, 10th Oct. 1689, for not reading the Proclamation of the Estates, and not praying for King William and Queen Mary. He retired to Newton in Boharm, to which he succeeded on the death of his brother Thomas, 16th May 1692, and was drowned in crossing the Spey 8th June 1697. He marr. 17th July 1683, Isobel Leslie, Mortlach, and had issue Thomas, died 1703; Margaret (marr. Alexander Anderson); Jean (marr. James Chalmers, factor to the Duke of Gordon, and was mother of Alexander Chalmers, min. of Cairney); Isobel (marr. Robert Stewart of Towiemore). [Peterkin's Constitution, 86.]"

Banff, said in the Lyon Register to be of the same family as Archbishop Law, was William of Newton, who had issue, Thomas of Newton, d.s.p. ; Mr William of Newton, d.s.p. ; Margaret, married William (see Note) Anderson of Newton ; Jean, died unmarried (see Note); Isobel, married Robert Stewart of Towiemore."
