"James (Ogilvy) was styled of Braedownie during his father's lifetime.[1 Laing Charters 361 and Reg.de Aberbrothoc Vol. chrtr.658] He was granted a Precept of Clare Constat on 2 May 1534 as heir to his deceased father in the Milton of Alyth. [2 NRS GD16/12/115]

About 1515, James married Katherine Gordon and they had six sons:

Alexander his heir

James who was granted lands in Perthshire by his father and was designed of Laws

John who was progenitor of the family Ogilvy of Inshewan

David who received Kinrieff from his father and was styled of Kynref and also styled of Corsmyln (Crossmill).

Thomas who lived in Balhall and was granted Artithill at Cortachy by his father.

Walter who was granted the lands of Kilnhill and Bogwilk."
