"Alexander Cant, son of Andrew Cant minister at Aberdeen; educated at King's College, Aberdeen; M.A. (1636); licen. by Presb. of Dalkeith 26th Sept. 1639; adm. before 29th July 1646; was a member of the Commission of Assembly in 1648; named by Parliament, 31st July 1649, one of the Commissioners for visiting the College of Aberdeen. Joined the Protesters in 1651; dep. on the establishment of Episcopacy at the Restoration; ordered to appear before the Privy Council, 9th Dec. 1662, to answerfor his seditious carriage; died of scurvy at Aberdeen, 30th March 1665. He marr. Margaret, daugh. of Alexander Douglas of Downies (she survived him, and marr. (2) James Anderson of Westerton, Botriphnie), and had issue Andrew, min. of Trinity Parish, Edinburgh, and subsequently a non-jurant bishop; Isobel (marr. James Stuart, min. of Inveraven), and probably Margaret (marr. William Mitchell, min. of Dundee). [Acts of Parl., vi., 509; Inq. Ret.
