Annabella was registered as Annabella Shand. No father's name was recorded. her mother was Christian Shand, a domestic servant. The informant of the birth was William Shand, the child's grandfather who gave notice of her birth before the registrar Walter Milne at Keig on 29 November 1860.

Annabella Dawson was recorded in the 1861 census for Keig parish living with her mother and her mother's family in the croft called Hillhead. She had been born in Keig and was recorded as 4 months old. ^{1 2 3}
