The informants of infant John Johnston's birth in 1879 were his mother Helen Shand and his father John Johnston, an agricultural labourer, of Kincraigie in the parish of Tough Aberdeenshire. The birth was notified before James Reid, registrar, at Alford on 25 April 1879. ²

John had a relationship with Helen SHAND, daughter of William SHAND and Christian ROBSON. (Helen SHAND was born on 9 June 1848 in Keig parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland ^{1 3 4}, baptised on 12 August 1848 in Keig parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland ⁴ and died 9 February 1921 at 5.00 am in 25 Dee Village Road, Aberdeen, Scotland ^{3 5}.). The cause of her death was chronic rheumatism and debility.
