" ... his brother, John Innes, 17th, resigned his chiefship to Alexander Innes of Crommey, grand-nephew of the 13th chief."

from Clans, Septs and Regiments

"John Innes. He was evidently a person of no great capacity. On 15 March 1577 he entered into a mutual entail with Alexander Innes of Cromie to the effect that, failing heirs-male of their bodies, the other should succeed to the whole estates. This arrangement afterwards occasioned much ill-feeling and tragic consequences in the family. John Innes was alive in 1585, but was obliged to give up all his interest in the estates."

from Scots Peerage (vol 7) 1 2

John married Elizabeth ABERNETHY, daughter of Alexander ABERNETHY 6th Lord Saltoun of Abernethy and Alison KEITH, in 1580.1 (Elizabeth ABERNETHY was born about 1557.)

  Marriage Notes:

"He (John Innes) married, in 1580, Elizabeth, daughter of Alexander Abernethy, sixth Lord Saltoun, and widow of John, eighth Lord Glamis (see Note). As by her he had no issue, the whole male line of Alexander, son of James Innes, came to an end, and the representation of the family devolved upon James Innes of Cromie, descended from Robert Innes, second son of James Innes of that Ilk ..." (page 355)

"Elizabeth or Elspeth, contracted, when very young, 27 February 1572-73, to Thomas Urquhart, younger of Cromarty. Whether this marriage took place does not appear. She afterwards married John Innes of that Ilk ; there is a contract between Lord Saltoun and John Innes for his daughter's liferent." (page 412)

from Scots Peerage (vol 7)

Note:
This Elizabeth Abernethy was not married to John Lyon, Lord Glamis. Her aunt, whose name was the same, was married to him as her second husband.
