James married Margaret FARQUHARSON, daughter of Roderick FARQUHARSON and Diana FORBES, on 30 May 1753.^{1 2} (Margaret FARQUHARSON was born about 1720.)

The marriage of James McHardy and Margaret Farquharson appears not in the OPR but in the Kirk Session Records CH2/343/2 which contains lots of baptisms and marriages scattered untidily through assorted pages. Page 152 starts off with the marriages of James McHardy and Margaret Farquharson and also James Walker and Henret Lumsden who were married on the same day - May 30th. But the year was not shown then. Lower on the same page are some 1762 marriages with the words marriage and parish spelt in this way instead of mariage and parriche (as spelt for the McHardy and Walker marriages). 1762 was added in next to the McHardy and Walker entries but this is in a different hand and obviously added much later - and 1762 does not fit with the early children of either of these marriages. My inspection in the 1990s of the original volume of CH2/343/2 suggested that it was used for marriages (spelt correctly) from page 155 on 2 September 1753 onwards. So it seems that the first two marriages on page 152 were on 30 May 1753."
