  General Notes:

"In November 1562, Thomas Gordon of Kennertie, who had apparently taken part in the Earl of Huntly's rebellion, was obliged to ward within the city of St. Andrews, and to remain within four miles thereabout without endeavouring to escape, and Alexander Leslie of Ednalite became cautioner for him to this effect (Reg. of Privy Council, vol. i.,p. 221). Thomas Gordon afterwards became styled 'of Glenmuick,' and upon 24th June 1563, he has a charter from Queen Mary of the lands of Balnacraig and Braeruddoch, extending to two ploughgates; the lands formerly belonged to said Thomas, and were held by him of the late George, Earl of Huntly. They were now in the Queen's hands by reason of the forfeiture pronounced in Parliament against said Earl upon 28th May last. Thomas Gordon is to hold the lands of the Queen and her successors in fee and heritage for the usual rights and services (Aboyne Charter Chest). He appears to have died soon after, for on 16th February 1563-4, Queen Mary directs Precept to the Sheriff of Aberdeen to infeft John Gordon, son and heir of late Thomas of Glenmuick, in the lands of Balnacraig and Braeruddoch, extending to two carucates. The lands had been granted to Thomas upon Huntly's forfeiture, but Thomas did not receive Sasine (Ibid.)."

  Research Notes:

DESIGNATION OF THOMAS GORDON

Lumsden's Genealogy of the Family of Forbes names the husband of Margaret, daughter of John Forbes and Mariot Gordon, as Thomas Gordon 'of Kinaldie', perhaps by analogy with the several Forbes gentlemen who were 'of Kinaldie'.

Some members of the Strachan family were 'of Kinaldie' too, but although some Lesmoir Gordons were served heir to Grudie, land in the barony of Kinaldie, there do not appear to have been Gordons who were known as 'of Kinaldie'.

In The Gordons of Kennerty and Braichlie, Dr John M. Bulloch writes of a Thomas Gordon, 3rd laird of Kennerty, who married a woman named Margaret Forbes as his first wife and Katharine Gordon of the Lesmoir family as his second.

Bulloch also lists the various forms of the place we now know as Kennerty:

Kennerty, Kennerdy, Kennardy, Kenachie, Kennachie, Kennathill

and writes:

"In regard to Kennerty, Mr Macdonald ('Place Names of West Aberdeenshire,' page 224) says that the oldest form of the name is exactly the same as Kynnardy in Banffshire and elsewhere, which means the 'head or end of the little height.' "

If the oldest form of the name is 'Kynnardy', it is within some degree of likelihood that this was confused or conflated with 'Kinaldie', the liquid consonants 'l' and 'r' often being interchanged.

Moreover the chronology is consistent, so that the mysterious 'Thomas Gordon of Kinaldie', unknown and without family, may be replaced by the known Thomas Gordon of Kennerty, both of whom had a wife named Margaret Forbes. 2 4

Thomas married Margaret FORBES, daughter of John FORBES 3rd of Brux, 'the Glyd Laird' and Mariot GORDON, before 11 February 1534.1 2 3 (Margaret FORBES was born about 1510.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Nota. - The above-named Margaret Forbes (daughter of John Forbes and Mary Gordon), married one Thomas Gordon of Kinaldie, and Janet her sister was married to John Forbes of Balfluig."

from Family of Forbes

"1555 December 17. - James Gordon, 'of Coldstone,' witnessed a precept by George, Earl of Huntly, for infefting Thomas Gordon of Kennerty as heir to his father. This Thomas was apparently son to Alexander and grandson to an elder Thomas of Kennerty. His first wife was a Katherine Forbes, his second Katherine Gordon. daughter of James Gordon of Lesmoir. The elder Thomas may possibly be the same person as Thomas Gordon of Kenchice (? Kenertie) or Braickley, the third son of Thomas of Daugh of Ruthven by his 2nd wife, and brother of George Gordon of Cushney (Records of Aboyne, pp. 126, 127, and Balbithan MS., p. 66).'

from Lesmoir

"King James V. on 11th February 1534, grants a charter to Thomas Gordon of Kennertie, and Margaret Forbes his spouse, of the lands of Kennertie and Murseit, with the fishings thereof, in the Barony of Kennertie : To hold to the said Thomas and Margaret and their heirs (Reg. Mag. Sig., xxv., 8y). On 17th December 1535, there is Precept of Clare Constat by George, Earl of Huntly, Lord Superior of the Lordship of Aboyne, for infefting Thomas Gordon, son of deceased Alexander Gordon, as lawful and nearest heir to him, in the lands of Braeruddoch and Craigton; witnesses, James Gordon of Coldstone, Nicolas Ros of Auchlossin, Walter Barclay of Gartly, and Mr. William Gordon, Rector of Esse (Alwyne Charter Chest). Thomas Gordon was one of the assize upon an inquisition respecting the woods and lands of Nether Ruthven in Cromar, 1537. He appears to have married a second time, for, on 4th August 1545, the Queen, with the consent of the Secret Council, grants a charter to him and Katherine Gordon his spouse, and the heirs to be procreate between them, of the lands of Auldtoun of Kennertie and the shepherd's croft thereof, with the salmon fishing in the water of Dee, &c., which lands Thomas Gordon had personally resigned (Reg. Mag. Sig., xxix., 256). This Katherine was relict of William Blackhall of Barra (p. 79)."

Thomas next married Katharine GORDON, daughter of James GORDON 1st of Lesmoir and Margaret STEWART 'Lady Eden', by 4 August 1545.1 (Katharine GORDON was born about 1526.)

  Marriage Notes:

"This Thomas (Gordon) was apparently son to Alexander and grandson to an elder Thomas of Kennerty. His first wife was a Katherine Forbes, his second Katherine Gordon. daughter of James Gordon of Lesmoir."
