from Sheriff Court Records, Aberdeen (i. 320 and 321)

Note: This extract refers to Catharine Barclay as grandmother of Alexander Fraser, 8th of Philorth ,who married Magdalen Ogilvy. Although the eldest son of Patrick Barclay, died before his father, and did not actually succeed him as laird, it is difficult to see to whom else this 'umquhill George barclay', her brother, might refer. The 19th and last Barclay of Gartley, named George, did not die until 1602, so could not be referred to in 1584 as 'umquhill'. 2

George married Christian STEWART, daughter of Sir David STEWART 3rd of Rosyth and Marion HERRIES.1 (Christian STEWART was born about 1470.)

  Marriage Notes:

"The name of Patrick Barclay's eldest son is unknown. He married Christian Stewart, and died in the lifetime of his father ... "

(On the occasion in 1516 of the resignation of lands by Patrick Barclay of Gartley)
"The free tenement is reserved to the said Patrick and a reasonable terce to Agnes Gordon, his spouse. Also a portion is noted as having been resigned by Christian Stewart, with consent of her husband, Edward Bruce; hence it is assumed that this Christian Stewart had been the wife of Patrick's eldest son, and was mother to his heir, Walter, and his granddaughter, Christina."
