LONGSIDE

"Peterhead The parish of Peterhead was, in early times, known by the titles of Peterugie and Inverugie. The church was dedicated to St Peter, and belonged to the Abbey of Deer. The parish was formerly very extensive, but in 1620 a church - designated 'the ower kirk of Peter-Ugie' - was built. This church, with its lands, received the name of Longside, and in 1641 was 'erectit in ane severall paroch kirk be it selff, and disvnited fra the said mother kirk of Peterugie." (Acts of Parliament.)"

REFORMATION

In the second half of the 16th century, many Abbey lands, dues and properties in Aberdeenshire came into the hands of the king. James VI awarded much of this land to the Keith family, to Robert Keith for life, and to his nephew George Keith, the Earl Marischal and his heirs. A list is to be found in the decree of 1574 for the teinds of Deer, Peterhead and Foveran, due to the Earl Marischal, as well as a later one of 1638. The lands in Buchan that once belonged to the medieval Cistercian Abbey of Deer founded by William Comyn in 1219 were almost all in the parishes of Old and New Deer, as well as in Longside, St Fergus, Peterhead, Ellon and Foveran. These passed into the Keith family.
