According to
Memorials of the Scottish Families of Strachan and Wise by Charles Rogers (1877):

"On the 11th July 1469, Robert Strachan and Alicia Browne, his wife, obtained from Sir Thomas Maule of Panmure a charter of the lands of Ballowsy (Balhousie) in the county of Forfar."

This Robert Strachan may have been the father of Euphame Stravhan who married John Carnegie, 4th of Kinnaird.

The text goes on to outline further instances of its links with the Strachan family:

1509 Robert Strachan named "one of the bailies for infefting John Carnegie of Kinnaird and his wife in a portion of the lands of Coolistown, in the barony of Rescobie and county of Forfar (Fraser's Earls of Southesk, p. 23)"

1569 a bond of manrent "granted by James and Robert Strachan of Balhousie to Thomas Maule of Panmure for a new infeftment to them in the lands of Balhousie (Regist. de Panmure, vol. ii., p. 314)."

1599 "a contract was entered into between Robert Strachan of Balhoussie, with consent of Helen Carnegie, his spouse, on the one part, and Mr Andrew Drummond, minister at Panbride, on the other part, whereby for 2264 merks Robert Strachan disponed to Drummond 'the shadow half' of Balhoussie, under reversion for the sum above named (Reg. of Deeds, vol. Ixxii.). On the 31st May of the same year, Robert Strachan of Balhousie, with John Shepperd, his son-in-law, granted an obligation to Thomas Hunter, notary in Dundee, for 200 merks (Reg. of Deeds, vol. Ixxv.)."

1601 "On the 26th January 1601, Andrew Fleschour, merchant-burgess of Dundee, granted an obligation to Robert Strachan of Balhousie, whereby, notwithstanding that 'the said Robert had infeft the said Andrew in his lands of Balhousie irredeemably,' yet the latter agreed to dispose of his rights to the lands, consenting to the sale of them by the said Robert to John Strachan of Claypotts (Reg. of Deeds, vol. Ixxix.). On the 8th May 1601, a contract was subscribed at Dundee between John Strachan of Claypotts on the one part, and Robert Strachan of Balhousie, with consent of Helen Carnegie, his spouse, on the other part, for the sale by the latter to the former of the lands of Balhousie, under reversion for 2000 merks (Keg. of Deeds, vol. Ixxxiii.)."

1602 "John Strachan of Balwyssie (Balhousie) granted a bond of manrent to Patrick Maule of Panmure (Regist. de Panmure, vol. ii., p. 317) An instrument of resignation 'ad remanentiam' of the lands of Balhousie and others was granted by John Strachan of Balhousie in favour of Patrick Maule of Panmure, his superior (Regist. de Panmure, vol. ii., p. 318)."

This name may also be connected to the barony of 'Ballousie' or 'Ballowsie', linked to the Eviot family and Balhousie Castle. 4 5

James married Janet MAULE, daughter of Robert MAULE of Panmure, Sheriff of Angus and Isobel MERCER, in 1540.1 (Janet MAULE was born about 1525 and died by 11 February 1594(1595) 1 2.)
