"In the month of June 1563, he (George Hamilton) married Barbara, daughter of Sir (see Note below) John Cockburn of Ormiston, distinguished in historyas one of the most intrepid reformers of the age, and sister (see Note below) of that Alexander Cockburn whose astonishing attainments and early death have been immortalised by the poetic genius of Buchanan. By his lady, who survived him, he had six sons and five daughters:
1. Sir John, his successor.
2. James, who received from his father the lands of Darngabir and Burnbrae. By his spouse, Margaret Inglis, a daughter of Murdiston, he left only female issue.
3. Robert, of whom again.
4. David who died unmarried before 1607.
5. George who died unmarried before 1607.
6. Samuel who died unmarried before 1607.
1. Joane, married to Sir John Lindsay of Dunrod, and thereafter to Robert Williamson of Mureston.
2. Helen, married, in July 1585, to John, son and heir-apparent of Robert Mure of Caldwell.
3. Margaret, married to Andrew Hamilton of Letbame.
4. Alison, married to James Roberton of Earnock.
5. Mary, married to her cousin, Robert Cockburn of Butterdeane, advocate, a son of tbe house of Ormiston."

*Sir* John Cockburn was Barbara's brother. Her father, John Cockburn of Ormiston, was not knighted. The Alexander Cockburn mentioned in the extract was her father's brother, her uncle, not her brother. 1 2
