NUMBERING

The fourth laird of Dun, John Erskine, and his son, also John, both died at Flodden. In the Pedigree of Erskine of Dun in the article Erskine of Dun by A. W. Cornelius Hallen, the son, John Erskine married to Margaret Ruthven, is numbered as '5th of Dun'. Most other sources reserve this number '5th of Dun' for John Erskine of Dun, his son, born about 1508-9, who married Elizabeth Lindsay as his first wife. This latter system of numbering is generally used here, with a bracketed number given also, indicating that another numbering is possible if the second John Erskine who fell at Flodden is included in the numbering. 2

John married Margaret RUTHVEN, daughter of Sir William RUTHVEN Lord Ruthven and Isabel LEVINGTON 'of Saltcoats', before 21 June 1508.1 (Margaret RUTHVEN was born about 1478 and died in 1548 1 3.)
