John married Isobel MONTGOMERY, daughter of Sir Hugh MONTGOMERY 2nd Lord Montgomery, 1st Earl of Eglinton and Helen CAMPBELL.¹ (Isobel MONTGOMERY was born about 1505.)

"Isobel (Montgomery), who had a grant from her father of the ward and marriage of Robert, son of the late Patrick Montgomerie of Giffen (see Note below). She was married to John Mure of Caldwell, and had issue."

Note:

"The Earl's daughter Isabella (or Isobel) was given 'the ward and marriage of Robert Montgomery, son and heir of deceased Patrick Montgomery of Gyffin, and failing of the said Robert by his death unmarried of the marriage of any other heir or heirs of the said deceased Patrick who should happen to succeed him in his heritage hold of the Earl.'

This charter is abstracted in the National Records of Scotland public online catalog,[¹ GD3/1/1/50/5] and is given in full in the original Latin in Sir William Fraser's Memorials of the Montgomeries.[² Memorials of the Montgomeries, Earls of Eglinton by William Fraser] Isabella did not marry Robert herself (as Paterson has stated [³ History of the County of Ayr, with a Genealogical Account of the Families of Ayrshire by William Paterson]), but it does appear that her daughter Agnes Mure married Robert's heir, Patrick Montgomerie."

John next married Christian ROSS, daughter of Ninian ROSS 3rd Lord Ross of Halkhead and Elizabeth RUTHVEN, 10 July 1538(dispensation) married 1543.^{1 2} The marriage ended in divorce. (Christian ROSS was born about 1524 and died before February 1556(1557).)

"He (Nicolas Ramsay) married, secondly, on or about 5 November 1552, Christian, daughter of Ninian, Lord Ross of Hawkhead, some time wife to John Mure of Caldwell."

"Janet Kennedy, m. by 16 August 1559, to John Mure of Caldwell, (he had previously been married to Christian, daughter of Ninian, 3rd Lord Ross, but from whom he was divorced, and was killed by William Cunningham of Aiket on 10 September 1570), when she had a charter for the lands of Thornton from her brother Thomas Kennedy of Bargany."
