John married Isobel MONTGOMERY, daughter of Sir Hugh MONTGOMERIE 2nd Lord Montgomerie, 1st Earl of Eglintoun and Helen CAMPBELL.^{1 2} (Isobel MONTGOMERY was born about 1505.)

"Isobel, who had a grant from her father of the ward and marriage of Robert, son of the late Patrick Montgomerie of Giffen. She was married to John Mure of Caldwell, and had issue."

John next married Christian ROSS, daughter of Ninian ROSS 3rd Lord Ross of Halkhead and Elizabeth RUTHVEN, 10 July 1538(dispensation) married 1543.^{2 3} The marriage ended in divorce. (Christian ROSS was born about 1524 and died before February 1556(1557).)

"Janet Kennedy, m. by 16 August 1559, to John Mure of Caldwell, (he had previously been married to Christian, daughter of Ninian, 3rd Lord Ross, but from whom he was divorced, and was killed by William Cunningham of Aiket on 10 September 1570), when she had a charter for the lands of Thornton from her brother Thomas Kennedy of Bargany."
