James Gordon was a witness at the baptism of his brother Peter's natural son George in Rothes in 1810.

In 1841 the census for Rothes in Morayshire recorded a James Gordon living in New Street, seven or eight households from Peter Gordon's family. James was recorded as 67 years of age and had been born outside of Morayshire. He was an agricultural labourer by occupation. In the same household were John Stephen aged 55 years, a publican, James, Mary and Ann Innes, Joseph Groves a pedlar and Mary Dunbar a servant.

The Kirk Session Minutes for the parish of Rothes in Moray recorded an entry for 17 June 1844, noting the death of James Gordon late officer to the Kirk Session. It went on to highlight that this left vacant the post of session officer which would require to be filled. ^{2 4 5}
