"Gilbert Garden [or Gardyn] of Boath, Forfarshire; was min. of Monifieth, 25th Dec. 1565, when he was a member of Assembly; pres. by James VI. 15th July 1568; trans, and adm. 2nd Feb. 1569; trans, to Cullen Aug. 1570, but returned before 1574, when Deskford, Ordiquhill, and Cullen were also in the charge. He was a member of Assembly in 1569 and Moderator of the Assembly which met at Stirling 6th Aug. 1571; removed to Cullen about 1595, but returned the following year. Bishop Adamson has styled him 'a man of a traiblous nature'; and it is said that 'he seldom went to the pulpit without his sword for fear of the Papists'; but the only foundation for this statement is a side note by a session-clerk of Fordyce in a minute-book nearly two centuries after G.' s time. He marr. (1) Margaret [whose surname on her tombstone is indecipherable], who died 6th April 1592, aged 66: (2) (cont. 16th Aug. 1592), Isobell, sister of James Strachan of Carmylie.
