" THE ROSES OF BELLIVAT MONUMENT AT GEDDES.

A short distance from Nairn is the site of the chapel of Geddes, now distinguished by its little cemetery the burying-place of the Rose family for centuries.

In ancient times the chapel was a place of some repute. Its founder is said to have been one of the Roses, who were Lords of Geddes prior to their acquisition of Kilravock...

The monument of the Roses of Bellivat is of interest, as it preserves to us the names and marriage connections of five successive lairds...

This Laird was twice married. His first wife was Margaret (?), daughter of Falconer, Laird of Halkerstown a family at one time powerful in the north. His second and third sons became ancestors of the families of Logie, afterwards Lochihills and Budwoehil. He married secondly, Christine Gordon, daughter of Patrick (?) Gordon of Letterfourie, by whom he had four sons, some of whom were ancestors of the families of Logh, Corridown, Ailanbuie, etc. "

"John Rose of Ballivat possessed extensive estates in the shires of Banff, Moray, Nairn, and Inverness, but he suffered so much loss and annoyance owing to these disturbances (a feud with Dunbars of Moynes that erupted in 1598) that, about the year 1605, he sold his Nairnshire property to Falconer of Lethen, whose sister he had first married, and retired to Glenlivet, where he lived as a hermit."

John next married Christine GORDON, daughter of Patrick GORDON 2nd of Letterfourie and Helen INNES, 1605(1606).1 2 (Christine GORDON was born about 1583 and died after 11 June 1619 3.)

"To his second wife, John of Bellivat married Christine, daughter of Gordon of Letterfourie, and by her had four sons. The eldest son, Lieutenant Colonel Lachlan Rose of Logh, gained much honour by his military skill and bravery in Germany, England, and Scotland, and had two sons, viz., John and Hugh, of whom I can give no account with certainty. The second son, Walter, of Coridown, was father of John of Coridown. The third son, Captain James Rose of Ailanbuie, was father of John Rose of Ailanbuie. And the fourth son, Andrew, was father of John Rose, apothecary in London."
