  Research Notes:

"OF DALGETY"

Memorials of the Families of Strachan and Wise (1877), by Charles Rogers, states that

"Alexander Strachan married, first, Margaret Hay of Dalgety, and, secondly, Isabel Falconer of Halkerton (MacFarlane's MSS)."

However, in the account of The Hays of Delgaty for the Banffshire Field Club (1936) there is no 'Margaret Hay of Delgaty' who married Alexander Strachan of Thornton.

Nor does the Rogers' study offer any documentary evidence of the marriage; only reference to MacFarlane's manuscript is made.

In the Appendix to his book, Rogers includes extracts from a Genealogy manuscript in the possession of Mrs Barclay Allardice which refers to

"David Strachan, who married Margaret Hay, daur to the Lord of Dalgatie, and had no succession".

MacFarlane names David's wife as Marion Hay, daughter of William Hay, Earl of Erroll.

To increase the possibility of confusion even more, an earlier Thornton laird, named Alexander did marry a Margaret Hay, but not the daughter of a Delgaty laird.

If Sir Alexander Strachan, 10th Laird of Thornton, did marry a Margaret Hay, and if she were of the Delgaty family, then her father, according to dates, might well have been Walter Hay of Carnmucks. 1 2 3

Margaret married Sir Alexander STRACHAN of Thornton, son of John STRACHAN of Thornton and Margaret DURHAM.1 (Sir Alexander STRACHAN of Thornton was born about 1490 and died by 1 June 1548 1.)
