  Research Notes:

APOLOGIES to any reader who was misled by this researcher erroneously assigning the title of "Sheriff of Kincardine" to this John Strachan of Monboddo. After re-checking, some years after the original posting of this research, I am happy to acknowledge that it ws based on an inexperienced mis-reading of a secondary source, namely:
"John Strachan (Strathauchan) of Monbodo elder sher. of Kincardine 4 Dec 1581"

from Testaments of Fordoun people from the Register of Testaments of the Commissariot of Edinburgh, 1514-1600
Clearly the above refers to the sheriffdom of Kincardine, as a descriptive location, rather than an appended title of the individual cited. I am grateful to Mike Wade for contacting me regarding this. 10

John married Eupham STRACHAN, daughter of John STRACHAN of Thornton and Margaret DURHAM.1 (Eupham STRACHAN was born about 1510 and died before 13 June 1583 5 11.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Monboddo Strachan. - Strachan, Laird of Monboddo, married Craigie's daughter Straton, and she had to him an son called Andrew Strachan, who married Ogill's daughter ffentoun, and she had to him James, who married Barrowfield's daughter Garden, and she had to him an son named John, who married Eupham Strachan, daughter to John Strachan of Dillivaird, and she had to him James Strachan, who married Marjory Ramsay, daughter to umq'le William Ramsay of Balmain."

from Memorials of the Families of Strachan and Wise (1877 Appendix)

Note:

The above is an extract from a manuscript entitled "A Genealogie of the Barons of the Mearnes unto the year of God 1578" in the possession of Mrs Barclay Allardice. It appears to contradict the now-accepted placing of William Strachan as the father of the James Strachan who married Egidia Gardyne.
