MAITLAND, James of Lethington 1User ID: J886. Noted events in his life were: 1. Sale: of Lethington and other land, by 1613, Scotland. 1 James married Agnes MAXWELL, daughter of William MAXWELL 5th Lord Herries of Terregles and Katherine KER.1 (Agnes MAXWELL was born about 1578.) Marriage Notes: "On 8 January 1584 his (James Maitland's) uncle, Sir John Maitland, received a gift of his ward and marriage. He was served heir to his father in two-thirds of the barony of Boltoun. The gift of his marriage seems to have been a source of trouble. The lady fixed upon was Annabel Bellenden, sister to Sir Lewis Bellenden of Auchinoul, and rather than complete the marriage James Maitland bought up the letter of gift from his cousin, Richard Cockburn, into whose hands it had come. The transaction is embodied in a formal contract dated 28 October 1587, and the price of his freedom seems to have been 8000 merks. He married Agnes Maxwell, daughter of William, fifth Lord Herries, to whom he provided a liferent of his lands of Stevenston, and by whom he had at least a son Richard, born prior to 16 June 1593, when he was infeft on charters from his father in Garvet and other lands, and two daughters." |
