Robert was apprenticed to Andrew Purves, merchant, on 26th July 1626, according to Fasti Ecclesiae. No Andrew Purves has been found at this time in the north east, although there was an Andrew Purves, merchant, in Edinburgh. A David Purves had been resident in Johnshavin, in the parish of Benholme in the Mearns. His will and testament was dated 21 October 1588. 5 6 7
