"The Aikmans of Lordburn were prominent in the affairs of Arbroath for many generations before John Aikman (1613-93) bought the Cairney estate on the outskirts of the town. This seems to have had a very modest house (later divided into cottages and demolished in the 19th century), but lands stretching out into St. Vigeans parish."
