In 1859 John McLeod's father, also, John, was the informant of his son's birth before the registrar, Walter Milne, at Keig on 31 March 1859.

John's daughter, Jane, was born at Alford in 1882. Her father was the informant of the birth before the registrar, James Reid, at Alford on 26 May 1882. The date and place of John McLeod's marriage to Jane's mother, Helen Shand, was also noted as 31 December 1881 at Alford. John McLeod was recorded as a farm servant.

John McLeod gave notice of his son George's birth before the registrar, Charles Stronach, at Aberdeen on 31 January 1891. John McLeod was recorded then as a foreman carter. John's marriage to Helen Shand, George's mother, was noted as having taken place in December 31 1882 [sic]. In fact the marriage took place on 31 December 1881 and was registered in 1882.

The 1891 census for St Nicholas parish Aberdeen recorded John McLeod as head of the household living at 26 Charlotte Street there. The household comprised John, his wife and their son and daughter, his 2 stepsons and a lodger called George Beattie, a single man of 28 years who was a shoemaker. John McLeod was a carter by occupation and was aged 32 years. He had been born in Keig, Aberdeen.

When George's wife Helen died in 1921 George was already dead. He was recorded in her death certificate as having been a farm servant. 1 2 3 4 5


John married Helen SHAND, daughter of William SHAND and Christian ROBSON, on 31 December 1881 in Alford parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.1 (Helen SHAND was born on 9 June 1848 in Keig parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland 3 6 7, baptised on 12 August 1848 in Keig parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland 7 and died 9 February 1921 at 5.00 am in 25 Dee Village Road, Aberdeen, Scotland 1 3.). The cause of her death was chronic rheumatism and debility.
