"The first Earl of Morton married Joanna, third daughter of King James I. She had the misfortune to be deaf and dumb, and had been contracted on 18 October 1440 to marry James, third Earl of Angus, but he died before the marriage took place. She was sent to France in 1445, but returned in the spring of 1458, and the marriage took place before 15 May 1459, when a royal charter was granted to the Earl and his spouse Joanna, sister of King James II."
