"By contract of sale, dated 14th February, 1702, Provost Ross acquired from David Rickart the lands and barony of Arnage in Ellon at the price of 40,000 merks Scots, or £2,222 sterling, and on the 22nd July following obtained a charter under the Great Seal erecting these newly-acquired lands into a free barony, with power of 'pit and gallows.'

The family property of Clochcan was conveyed to him by his niece Jean, Lady Ogilvie, by disposition dated 21st March, 1711."
